The Basis of Our Therapy I: Myofascial in Human Anatomy

 What is Myofascial?

Myofascial is a type of connective tissue in the human body and is found underneath the skin. It functions as a protective sheath that covers the muscles, fatty tissue, skeleton and blood vessels found throughout the body. Myofascial maintains the flexibility and mobility of the muscles, tendons and ligaments, as well as minimises the shock and impact produced by the walking, running and jumping motions when the human body engages in motion and exercising. Besides this, the myofascial system is also responsible for transmitting sensory information such as tension, pressure, perception of the position and movement of the body and even hormonal signals. Amazingly, according to medical research, the transmission speed of the myofascial system is even faster than the nervous system. This is largely due to the fact that the myofascial system passes along signals in the form of shock waves and its speed can reach 1100km per hour which is approximately thrice as fast as that of the nervous system, thus enabling the body to move more efficiently and protect it from injuries.

If the body remains in a stiff and inflexible condition for a prolonged period, it will eventually cause the myofascial to become hardened and weak. This not only makes the body parts vulnerable to inflammation which produces chronic aches, it will also increase the risk of sustaining sprains and torn ligaments that leads to acute pain; a more serious scenario is developing problems in the spine, for example, the premature aging of the neck bones, having lumbar disc herniation (slip disc in the waist area) or even bone spurs. Therefore it is critical to maintain the well-being and vitality of the myofascial if you desire to stay youthful and healthy.

The Basis of Our Therapy II: TCM Meridians

 What are Meridians?

Traditional Chinese Medical philosophy believes the body is intricately connected by meridians – channels or passages through which life-sustaining substances move and are transported to nourish the various organ systems. If we compare the body to a well-constructed building fully furnished with amenities, then the meridians are just like the electric cable network found inside the walls of the building. For the building to be brightly lit and function normally, it all depends on how well the electric network runs. Should a short circuit occur, the building will be plunged into darkness and everything comes to a standstill; similarly, it is believed if the meridian channels are blocked, the life-sustaining substances cannot be transported efficiently to the organs, thereby causing pains, aches and ill health.

The revered book of ancient Chinese medical wisdom Huang Di’s Classic of Internal Medicine states: “The meridian themselves, so they dictate life and death, deal with illnesses, regulate the under and overflow of energies, so they must be understood.” Just this one quote highlights the importance of body meridians. With the meridians, we can uncover the weaker organ systems of the body, relieve the pain and symptoms of ill health and build up one’s health. How can we not have a fair understanding of the state of our meridians? The amazing thing about meridians is that though their alignment, as well as their startings and endings within the organs and in many body parts, correspond to the network of nerves, blood and lymph circulation as discovered by modern sciences, the effects of meridians are only detectable in living, breathing man. Just like electricity, you know it runs the electrical appliances when they are switched on, yet our naked eyes cannot see the real substance of electricity.

In reality, man’s daily life is inseparable from the workings of meridians. When they are blocked, the energy and blood cannot circulate properly. “With blockage comes pain”, hence the body will experience pain, soreness, numbness or other discomfort. However, when one stimulates the sensitive points – acupoints – found on the meridians to clear away the blockages, such that the energy and blood can flow well as usual, these symptoms will disappear or subside, attaining the effect of “No blockages no pain”.  Besides enabling the body to recover from health problems caused by the poor flow of energy and blood, regular stimulation of the meridians can also prevent the development of “future ailments”, and this is the true essence behind effective healthcare management.
